Leading Innovation from the Middle

Should schools lead change from the bottom up? Or should governments lead change from the top down? This presentation, based on Professor Hargreaves’s book, Leadership from the Middle, and his recent LEGO-Foundation funded project to design and develop an innovative playful schools network across Canada, shows there is another way – leading from the middle. Andy will show how schools and school networks have unique shared powers to initiate, implement and diffuse innovative changes that benefit many students in many schools. He will explain and exemplify what leadership from the middle means and then, most importantly, outline the 7 skillsets that middle leaders need to move their leadership and their schools forward. How can they develop these skillsets. What moves do principals need to make to help them?
