Spark Learning Through Play
Throughout this breakout session, administrators will learn about the benefits that play has for children’s global development and learning as well as the play-based learning and improvisation activities that Sharon Scimeca, founder of ‘Universe of Play’ has implemented in Elementary Schools. They will discover various ways of making these play activities accessible to students both in the classroom and outdoors in nature. The types of play include sensory play, construction play, loose parts play, numeracy & literacy games, dramatic play and improvisation. How can teachers get creative in the ways in which they set up their play spaces, materials and activities? Administrators will be introduced to the hands-on, interactive workshops that ‘Universe of Play’ offers to teachers. How can parents of preschool students provide learning through play experiences for their children at home? Administrators are going to learn about the Parent Play-Based Learning Workshops offered at school whereby parents and their child(ren) get to take part in a fun, hands-on play experience they will always remember. This breakout session will be interactive whereby administrators will have the chance to reflect on, brainstorm and share their ideas and experiences in relation to past, present and future play opportunities within their school.
Biography
Sharon Scimeca is an inspiring play-based learning and improvisation facilitator and the visionary behind ‘Universe of Play’. Her passion lies in creating learning through play experiences for children that allow them to foster meaningful connections with one another. With a background in Psychology and years of experience as a behavior technician and child care worker in Elementary Schools, Sharon’s journey as an entrepreneur began with the establishment of ‘Universe of Play’. Currently, she continues to engage with students in elementary schools, utilizing various play activities like loose parts play, construction play, sensory play, dramatic play, and improvisation. Sharon is dedicated to empowering administrators, teachers, school support staff and parents with invaluable ideas and resources to design play spaces that nurture children’s creativity, social connections, innovation, and global development. When not immersed in the world of play with children, Sharon finds joy in nature walks, taking improv classes, and exploring her creativity through writing.Â
